Gustav Rudberg was the son of a commander and after a few years at sea he began his art studies at Brandt's drawing school and for Kraesten Iversen at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 1935-1937.
He then returned to Sweden and was accepted at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm 1937-1943. His role model was the Danish artist Oluf Høst.
A ‘mood’ painter, Rudberg partly grew up on the island of Hven, where he lived and painted during the summer during his adult life.
He made his breakthrough with the Swedish art critics with an exhibition at the Artists' House in Stockholm in 1959.
