Hugo Carlberg studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts from 1900 to 1905. Initially he dedicated himself to figure painting, but was also interested in plein air painting. Between 1905 and 1907 he traveled to study in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and France. He is best known for his landscapes in which he depicts spring and winter scenes.
