This exquisite little painting in an original frame is by Edvin Wilhelm Henning, a Swedish painter and sculptor born on 23rd May, 1899 in Stockholm. He is best known for painting street scenes of his hometown of Gothenburg.

It’s one of two paintings we have in our collection by Henning - see image of the two together - they make a wonderful pair. No surprise that Henning’s work is always very popular.

Henning studied at the Konstakademien (Academy of Fine Arts) in Stockholm and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the 1920s, as well as taking study trips to North and South America. Initially he worked as a Sculptor and had his debut solo exhibition at Fortuna Konsthandel in Stockholm. He exhibited in group shows including Sveriges Allmänna Konstförenings (Sweden's General Art Association) exhibitions at Liljevalch's art gallery in Stockholm. He is represented in the collection fo the Moderna Museet in Stockholm with a painting and a sculpture. Henning died on July 13, 1955 in Gothenburg, aged 56.
