Oscar Törnå was of French ancestry living in Sweden. He began receiving an education in the trades when he was 14, but eventually displayed an aptitude for art. With the support of some wealthy friends, he enrolled at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts and took part in the Academy's exhibition of 1868. He was awarded a medal in 1870 for one of his first landscape paintings. He later moved to France where he began painting ‘en plein air’. On his return to Sweden several of his works were purchased by the Royal Academy to be used for study material in their landscape classes.
